A Lakeside Vow, Twice Over: Jenna & Joe on Leech Lake

Jenna and Joe got married on a summer Saturday in Walker, Minnesota, at one of the best Brainerd Lakes wedding venues — the kind where the whole weekend lives on the water. The resort rises straight out of downtown Walker on the shore of Walker Bay, and the lake was inescapable all day: a birch arch on the lawn above Leech Lake for the vows, wildflower portraits along the shoreline, and, right at the end, a kiss on the marina dock as the sky went teal and orange over open water.

What follows is the day in the order it happened. It was a day built almost entirely around the lake, and around two people who had already decided, a year earlier, exactly what mattered.

MorningA Lakeview Morning at a Century-Old Resort

The day began at the water's edge — the lodge rising above a marina full of pontoons and fishing boats, the town of Walker softening into the trees behind it. Chase on the Lake has been a resort on Leech Lake for over a hundred years, and that history is tucked into the building: an antique Hotel Chase cash register still keeping watch over the lobby, a square grand piano in a red-curtained parlor. The kind of details that ground a wedding in its place before anyone is even dressed.

Upstairs, Jenna's morning ran slow and easy — a satin robe, mimosas, the dress waiting on a personalized hanger in the window light. Her bouquet was a riot of summer: sunflowers, delphinium, wildflowers in every color, the sort of arrangement that refuses to behave for anyone. There were dusty-blue heels for something blue, and a custom denim jacket on the chair with "Mrs. Morrison" written across the back — a name still new enough to feel like a surprise.

One detail said more than the rest. The ceremony was outside, on the lawn above the lake, under a birch arch dressed in summer wildflowers — the whole horizon of Leech Lake stretched out behind the couple and the guests gathered close on the grass. Joe came down the petal-strewn aisle with his mother beside him; Jenna arrived on her father's arm, beaming, that bouquet a wild burst of color in her hands.

And then a small, wordless act that quieted the whole arbor: so they could be at the same height for their vows, Jenna knelt down in her gown beside Joe's chair, the lake at their backs. Mid-vows, she leaned in to gently wipe his brow — an unscripted moment of care that made their officiant smile so wide he could barely keep reading. Joe held her gaze through every line. When it was over, the guests sent them back down the aisle in a full storm of flower petals, the lake glinting through the trees.

Portraits stayed close and easy. A gust off Walker Bay lifted Jenna's long veil into a sweep across the lakeside garden — the kind of summer frame in the Brainerd Lakes you can't plan for, you just stay ready. They leaned in nose-to-nose, laughed, kissed on the lawn with the pines and the water behind them. The wildflower bouquet sat in Joe's lap through most of it, a riot of color that did half the talking.

The reception moved indoors to the Walker Bay Ballroom, the room full of small, personal touches: eucalyptus runners and candlelight, a single-tier "foreva eva" cake, raspberry cupcakes, burgundy koozies stamped Jenna and Joe Morrison · July 2022. Their signature drink was The Folly — a vodka lemonade named for the dog who couldn't be there but very much was, complete with an illustrated portrait on the bar.

Their first dance didn't follow a script. Jenna spun out into the open floor with her arms thrown wide, and Joe pointed back at her across the room and watched her like she'd hung the moon. The parent dances brought the night's biggest laughs — Joe and his mom throwing their heads back, a kiss between them as the room watched; Jenna and her dad forehead-to-forehead. And during the toasts, Jenna lost it the way you do when people say the things they've been meaning to say all along — laughing through tears while Joe quietly enjoyed every second of it.

By the time the reception was in full swing, the sky over Leech Lake had turned. We slipped Jenna and Joe back out to the marina dock as the light softened — the Chase on the Lake lodge glowing across the water, the bay going still. Jenna led Joe down the dock, both of them laughing; she leaned in to kiss his temple and his whole face broke open. And then, as the sun dropped behind the lake, she leaned down to meet him for a kiss — the two of them a single silhouette against a sky of teal and burnt orange.

It's the frame of the night, and it only exists because Walker Bay faces west and Leech Lake hands you a sky like that right at the end of a July day. There was a quieter beat too — Jenna out on the dock with her father, a silhouette against the last of the light. The whole long, joyful day resolving down to the water, exactly where it had lived since morning.
