Documentary & Editorial Wedding Photography

Manhattan Beach Lodge Wedding Photographer

You picked Manhattan Beach Lodge because you wanted the whole place to yourselves — your people, Big Trout Lake, a weekend that belongs to no one else. Documentary and editorial photography that keeps every moment of it.

Start the Conversation

You chose Manhattan Beach Lodge because the whole property is yours — every room, every guest, every moment on Big Trout Lake. Your photographs should feel that private.

Most venues are shared spaces. Manhattan Beach Lodge is the opposite. When you book it, the property closes entirely to outside guests. The 20 lakeside rooms, the dock on Big Trout Lake, the dining room that seats 160, the grounds — all of it is exclusively yours. Every person there is someone you invited.

A venue this private deserves a photographer who already knows the property and understands the pace of a weekend where you're the only ones there. Just living it.

You Shouldn't Have to Think About Your Photographer. Your Only Job Is to Be There.

I'm Tim Larsen — a documentary and editorial wedding photographer based in the Brainerd Lakes area, with 19 years and 350+ weddings. I know what the dock looks like from the water side versus the lodge side. I know how the morning light comes through the lodge windows. I know the Big Trout Lake shoreline catches the western light late in the evening. It's always the people.

When you're the only guests on the property, the pace is different — and I've learned how to be present for that kind of unhurried, private-venue wedding. And when we do step away for portraits on the dock, I give you just enough direction to feel confident and enough space to actually be yourselves. Most couples tell me it was their favorite part of the day — and they went in dreading it.

Manhattan Beach Lodge Weddings

Most Venues Give You a Room. Manhattan Beach Lodge Gives You the Whole Property.

Manhattan Beach Lodge is a private-buyout venue on Big Trout Lake. The dock, the dining room, the lodge grounds, and every room on the property are exclusively yours for the weekend.

The Dock

Outdoor ceremony · Big Trout Lake

A ceremony on the dock puts the couple on the water itself, with the 1929 lodge visible on the shore behind. No ceremony looks like this anywhere on the Whitefish Chain.

The Dining Room

Indoor reception · Up to 160 guests

Intimate scale, lake-facing windows, a room that photographs differently from a resort ballroom.

The Lodge Grounds

Portraits · Getting ready · Cocktail hour

The full property — lawn, shoreline, mature trees, and the lodge exterior. All exclusively yours.

Accommodations

20 lakeside rooms · Private buyout

Every guest stays on-property. The entire lodge is exclusively yours for the weekend.

The Light at Manhattan Beach Lodge Is the Thing Nobody Warns You About

Manhattan Beach Lodge sits on the shore of Big Trout Lake, and the light changes throughout the day in ways that reward a photographer who knows the property. Morning light comes through the lodge windows with a warmth that's perfect for getting-ready coverage.

The Big Trout Lake shoreline catches the western light late in the evening, making the dock at sunset one of the strongest portrait windows at the venue. In midsummer, the golden window arrives around 7:30 PM. In September and October, it comes earlier and the light is warmer. It's the window I build every Manhattan Beach Lodge timeline around.

"When the light comes off Big Trout Lake in the last hour before sunset — that's when I bring you to the dock. That's the window the whole day is built around."

What a Manhattan Beach Lodge Wedding Day Actually Feels Like

Every Manhattan Beach Lodge wedding is different, but this reflects how a typical day at this private venue unfolds.

10:00 AM

Getting Ready

The morning is slow and unhurried — your room in the lodge, morning light through the windows, your people close by.

12:00 PM

Ladies / Gentlemen Portraits

You and your people before the day takes over. The lodge grounds, the shoreline, Big Trout Lake in the background.

1:30 PM

First Look

Just the two of you, before anyone else gets to see. The dock, the lodge exterior, the shoreline.

2:30 PM

Wedding Party Portraits

The lodge grounds, the mature trees, the Big Trout Lake shoreline — all exclusively yours.

4:00 PM

Ceremony — The Dock

On the water itself, with the 1929 lodge behind you and Big Trout Lake extending in every direction.

5:00 PM

Cocktail Hour

The lodge grounds, the lawn, the shoreline. Everyone exhales. I stay close and watch.

6:30 PM

Couple Portraits — Sunset on Big Trout Lake

The shoreline catches the western light. This is the window the whole day is built around.

7:00 PM

Reception Begins

The dining room fills. Lake-facing windows, intimate scale, toasts, first dance, dinner.

8:30 PM

Dance Floor

A private venue loosens people up in a way that a shared resort never does. The dance floor is worth staying for.

9:30 PM

Send-Off

Sparklers on the lodge paths, the dock lit up behind you — each send-off has a different feel.

You Only Get One Manhattan Beach Lodge Wedding. The Photographs Are How You Keep It.

The right photographer doesn't just document the day — he gives you a way back in. Every time you open that gallery, you're there again. The dock at sunset, the morning light through the lodge windows, the people, the feeling. All of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Manhattan Beach Lodge is a private-buyout venue with limited dates, so it books well in advance — often 12–18 months out for peak summer weekends. If your date is six months or less away, I'd still reach out. Openings exist, especially for shoulder season and weekday weddings.

Yes. When you book Manhattan Beach Lodge, the property closes entirely to outside guests. The 20 lakeside rooms, the dock, the dining room, and the grounds are all exclusively yours. Every person on the property is someone you invited. It changes the pace of the day — and the photographs reflect that.

Documentary means I'm watching — following what's happening, staying out of the way. Editorial means I'm directing — giving clear, minimal prompts to create a specific frame. The two work together: documentary coverage captures the day as it happened; editorial portraits give you the images you'll put on the wall — and moments worth protecting. At Manhattan Beach Lodge, both matter because the private-venue setting and Big Trout Lake give you frames worth building toward.

Most people are — and it's never been a problem. When you're the only guests on the property, the pace is different — there's no rushing, no audience of strangers. The getting-ready coverage happens while you're focused on other things, and by the time it's just the two of you on the dock, the camera has already faded into the background. During portraits I give clear, simple direction — where to stand, where to look — so you're never standing there wondering. Most couples tell me the dock session was their favorite part of the day.

No. Manhattan Beach Lodge on the Whitefish Chain is firmly in my home territory — I photograph throughout the Brainerd Lakes area regularly. No travel fees, no surprises.
