Autumn · Madden's on Gull Lake · Brainerd

Madison and Josh got married on a bright September Saturday — a Madden's on Gull Lake wedding right as the leaves along the footbridges started to turn. Bridesmaids who got ready in matching plaid flannel before they changed into burgundy. Ring bearers with bubble guns. An open-air Pavilion ceremony under a clear blue sky, and a recessional through a cloud of floating bubbles. It was the kind of fall day the Brainerd Lakes do best, and the resort gave us color in every direction.

Here's the day in order. Tim Larsen Photography photographed Madison and Josh's wedding at Madden's on Gull Lake in East Gull Lake, Minnesota — a thousand-acre resort peninsula with the lake on three sides — in the middle of September, when the property's footbridges and shoreline are just starting into autumn color.

MorningGetting Ready at Madden's

The morning had a sense of humor about it. Madison and her six bridesmaids got ready in matching plaid flannel shirts, piled onto a couch and laughing before anyone was in a dress. Her bouquet — peach garden roses, burgundy dahlias, ranunculus — sat by her pearl jewelry and a pair of metallic heels. She fastened an earring in a round wood-framed mirror; a bridesmaid in burgundy clasped a bracelet on her wrist. Small, unhurried things, the kind the cabins at Madden's give you room for.

Late MorningFirst Looks on the Lodge Staircase

Two first looks happened inside the lodge, near the big timber staircase. First her father — Madison came around the corner and he lost it, the two of them laughing and holding on. Then Josh, on the staircase landing, her hand at the back of his neck, her ring catching the window light. The lodge interiors at Madden's are warm and wood-lined, the kind of in-between spaces where these quieter moments can happen before the day opens up.

AfternoonAn Open-Air Pavilion Ceremony

The ceremony was outside under Madden's open-air Pavilion, full September sun and a clear blue sky overhead. Before it started, the two young ring bearers worked the lawn with bubble guns, filling the air ahead of the aisle. Josh crouched at the end of the aisle with his hands up, grinning, as the littlest one made his way down. Madison crossed an arched footbridge on her father's arm; in the aisle, Josh pulled her father into a hug. They said their vows under the draped timber pavilion, and walked back out through a cloud of bubbles, Madison laughing the whole way.

AfternoonBridal Party and Footbridge Portraits

This is where a fall wedding at Madden's earns it. The bridal party — groomsmen in black, bridesmaids in burgundy — walked the garden lawns in backlit afternoon light, the autumn foliage glowing behind them. Then we worked the property's wooden footbridges, the ones that arc over the lily ponds with the turning leaves overhead: Madison and Josh kissing on the planks, a twirl with her gown flaring, a quiet walk hand-in-hand. The footbridges are one of the most distinctive portrait settings anywhere in the Brainerd Lakes, and in September they frame themselves.

Mid-September on the peninsula, the footbridges go gold overhead and the light comes in low and warm off the lake. You don't have to do much. You just have to be paying attention when it happens.

EveningThe Reception at Madden's

Dinner and dancing happened under the pavilion, the soaring wood-paneled ceiling overhead and a stone fireplace anchoring the room. The toasts pulled a full head-back laugh out of Madison. The first dance was all soft smiles, her hand at the back of his neck. And then the father-daughter dance — Madison's face on her dad's shoulder, eyes closed, tears welling — the kind of moment a whole room goes quiet for. That's the frame I'll remember from this one.

DuskLast Light on Gull Lake

We slipped out for the last of the light. Madison and Josh walked the sandy lakeshore at golden hour, then Josh lifted her for a kiss as the sky over Gull Lake went orange and teal. A few quiet frames on a wooded path as the light turned warm — that's the one at the top of this post — and a last forehead-to-forehead silhouette on a covered porch over the water. Madden's faces west across Gull Lake, so the evening light comes straight off the water; in September it lands around 6:30 to 7:30, and it's worth holding the timeline open for it.

Planning a Madden's on Gull Lake Wedding?

If you're planning a Madden's on Gull Lake wedding, an autumn date is a strong one. Madden's is a thousand-acre peninsula with Gull Lake on three sides, and in September and early October the footbridges and shoreline turn while the open-air Pavilion stays comfortable. It's one of the most photographically generous venues in the Brainerd Lakes area — footbridges over the lily ponds, garden lawns, the Pavilion, a sandy beach, docks reaching into the lake. Madison and Josh used most of them in an afternoon, and the fall color did half the work. If you're weighing your options, I put together a guide to the best Brainerd Lakes wedding venues that places Madden's alongside the area's other spots.

A few notes for a fall date. Golden hour comes earlier than you'd think — around 6:30 to 7:30 in September and October — so build portraits and the dock into late afternoon rather than after dinner. The footbridges are the signature spot; give them time. And the Pavilion's open sides mean even a full-sun ceremony stays full of the lake and the trees. I shoot Madden's 60/40 documentary and editorial — most of the day observed, directed portraits worked in when the light's right — and couples who aren't used to a camera settle in fast once they see I'm mostly watching.

Common Questions About Madden's on Gull Lake Weddings

How much does a wedding at Madden's on Gull Lake cost?

Madden's venue and catering pricing varies by season, guest count, and which spaces you book, so the resort is the best source for those numbers. For photography, my wedding-day collections run $2,995–$5,895 depending on coverage hours. Most Madden's weddings — where the day runs from getting-ready through the last dance on the peninsula — land in Collection Two ($4,695, 10 hours, with a second photographer) or Collection One ($5,895, 12 hours), and a three-day celebration fits the Wedding Weekend ($11,500).

Where is Madden's on Gull Lake, and how far is it from the Twin Cities?

Madden's is in East Gull Lake, Minnesota, just outside Brainerd — about 2.5 hours north of the Twin Cities up Highway 371. Because most guests stay overnight on the peninsula, Madden's weddings often turn into full Friday-to-Sunday weekends.

How many guests can Madden's on Gull Lake accommodate?

The Pavilion — the 10,000-square-foot open-air space on the Gull Lake shoreline — seats up to about 250 for a reception, and the Wilson Bay Dining Room handles up to about 230. With 200-plus rooms across cabins and lodges, 700-plus guests can stay overnight on the property.

Is fall a good time for a wedding at Madden's on Gull Lake?

Yes — mid-to-late September and early October bring turning leaves along the footbridges and shoreline, and the open-air Pavilion stays comfortable. Madden's faces west across Gull Lake, so golden hour lands right on the water; in September and October that window runs about 6:30–7:30 PM, earlier than midsummer, so plan portraits and the dock for late afternoon.
