Autumn · Madden's on Gull Lake · Brainerd

Katie and Brenden got married on the first of October — an overcast, soft-gray Madden's on Gull Lake wedding on the kind of day couples sometimes worry about and never need to. The clouds turned Gull Lake to glass, the birches along the footbridges were just going gold, and the whole property rendered in even, painterly light. Lavender bouquets, a lakeside arch on the water, a pontoon hour with the bridal party, and — after dark — a first dance lit by a single light that I still come back to.

Here's the day in order. Tim Larsen Photography photographed Katie and Brenden's wedding at Madden's on Gull Lake in East Gull Lake, Minnesota — a thousand-acre resort peninsula with the lake on three sides — on a quiet, overcast first of October.

MorningGetting Ready at Madden's

The morning was unhurried, the way the cabins at Madden's let it be. Katie's gown hung on a beam beside a custom family-name sign; her bouquet — cream and lavender roses — sat nearby. Her mother fastened a heart-pendant necklace at her neck. She laughed at the mirror putting in an earring, and again on a leather ottoman in front of the stone fireplace, bouquet beside her. Soft window light did all of it.

AfternoonA First Look, and Portraits on the Footbridges

They did a first look on a covered porch — Brenden's face when he turned said the rest. Then we went out into the gray. This is where an overcast day at Madden's earns it: no squinting, no harsh shadows, just soft light on the lavender, the birches, and the water. We worked the property's wooden footbridges — a forehead-to-forehead on the planks, a twirl, a kiss under the birch canopy, a lift-and-kiss on the boardwalk — and the bridal party in lavender and grey cheered them through a kiss on the lawn.

Late AfternoonA Lakeside Arch Ceremony on Gull Lake

The ceremony was on the lawn at the water's edge, under a wooden arch draped with lavender and cream florals, Gull Lake and a boathouse behind it. Katie came down a long wooden staircase on her father's arm. They poured colored sand together, laughed through it when Brenden got animated, and kissed under the arch with the lake stretching out behind them. The overcast sky kept every face evenly lit — no harsh sun, no squint — straight through the recessional.

People apologize for a gray forecast. They shouldn't. Overcast is the most forgiving light there is — Gull Lake goes to glass and everything softens. Then the room goes dark and you get the other kind of frame entirely.

EveningA Pontoon Hour and the Reception

Between the ceremony and dinner, Katie and Brenden took the bridal party out on a pontoon — drinks on the cooler, the lake gone soft and silver, the kind of unscheduled hour the property makes possible. Then dinner and dancing moved into the wood-beamed ballroom under the antler chandeliers. The first dance is the frame at the top of this post: the room gone dark, a single light behind them, the two of them forehead-to-forehead and rim-lit. A dip, a flash-lit hug with an old friend, Katie spinning a flower girl off her feet — the night ran loud and warm after that.

Planning a Madden's on Gull Lake Wedding?

If you're planning a Madden's on Gull Lake wedding and the forecast looks gray, don't sweat it. Madden's is a thousand-acre peninsula with Gull Lake on three sides, and it's one of the most photographically generous venues in the Brainerd Lakes area — footbridges over the lily ponds, a lakeside lawn for the ceremony, docks and a beach, classic boats, and a wood-beamed reception hall. On an overcast day all of it renders in soft, even light, and the lake turns glassy and reflective. Katie and Brenden used most of the property in an afternoon and the gray sky never once got in the way. If you're still scouting, here's my guide to the best Brainerd Lakes wedding venues to see how Madden's compares to the rest of the area.

A couple of notes. Early October is the front edge of fall color here — birches just turning, mostly green-gold — so if you want peak color, mid-October is the safer bet. The footbridges are the signature portrait spot; give them time. And a dark reception room is not a problem — some of the strongest frames of the night come from a single light and a couple who forget the room is there. I shoot Madden's 60/40 documentary and editorial, mostly watching, stepping in to make a frame when the light's right.

Common Questions About Madden's on Gull Lake Weddings

How much does a wedding at Madden's on Gull Lake cost?

Madden's venue and catering pricing varies by season, guest count, and which spaces you book, so the resort is the best source for those numbers. For photography, my wedding-day collections run $2,995–$5,895 depending on coverage hours. Most Madden's weddings — where the day runs from getting-ready through the last dance on the peninsula — land in Collection Two ($4,695, 10 hours, with a second photographer) or Collection One ($5,895, 12 hours), and a three-day celebration fits the Wedding Weekend ($11,500).

Where is Madden's on Gull Lake, and how far is it from the Twin Cities?

Madden's is in East Gull Lake, Minnesota, just outside Brainerd — about 2.5 hours north of the Twin Cities up Highway 371. Because most guests stay overnight on the peninsula, Madden's weddings often turn into full Friday-to-Sunday weekends.

How many guests can Madden's on Gull Lake accommodate?

The Pavilion — the 10,000-square-foot open-air space on the Gull Lake shoreline — seats up to about 250 for a reception, and the Wilson Bay Dining Room handles up to about 230. With 200-plus rooms across cabins and lodges, 700-plus guests can stay overnight on the property.

Do overcast days photograph well at Madden's on Gull Lake?

Yes — a soft, overcast sky is some of the most flattering light there is. On a gray day Gull Lake goes glassy and the footbridges, birches, and shoreline render in even, painterly tones with no harsh shadows. An overcast fall wedding at Madden's photographs beautifully start to finish, and a moody reception light can still give you a dramatic first-dance frame after dark.
